Jet2 Launches Gatwick Flights to 29 Sunshine Destinations
Jet2 to launch 29 sunshine routes from Gatwick

In a significant expansion of its UK operations, holiday giant Jet2 has confirmed it will launch flights and package holidays from London Gatwick Airport next year. The move, described by the company's CEO as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity," marks a major strategic growth for the UK's largest tour operator.

A New Base for Sunshine Seekers

Jet2 has secured landing slots for six aircraft at Gatwick, the UK's second-busiest airport, following the release of additional capacity. The package holiday firm will initially operate flights from its new West Sussex base to 29 'sunshine destinations' across popular European hotspots including Spain, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, and Italy.

The inaugural flight from the new base is scheduled to depart for Tenerife in Spain on 26 March 2025. To service these new routes, Jet2 will base five new Airbus A321neo planes at Gatwick, with an additional aircraft positioned overseas. This establishment makes Gatwick the 14th UK airport to host a Jet2 base.

Economic Boost and Job Creation

The expansion is set to provide a substantial economic boost to the region. More than 300 new direct jobs are expected to be created, with roles for pilots, engineers, and cabin crew. Furthermore, the company anticipates that hundreds of additional indirect jobs will be generated in the local economy through associated services and supply chains.

Steve Heapy, Chief Executive of Jet2, expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture. He stated that for many years, the company had aspired to offer its acclaimed, service-led package holidays from London Gatwick. He emphasised the strong demand from both customers and independent travel agents for Jet2's award-winning flights and holidays to operate from the airport.

Airport Growth and Future Prospects

Pierre-Hugues Schmit, Chief Executive of London Gatwick, welcomed the announcement, calling it an exciting time for Jet2 to join the airport. He also highlighted that the recent government approval for the routine use of the airport's northern runway will further expand connectivity and stimulate additional economic growth for the South East.

This strategic move by Jet2 capitalises on Gatwick's status as a key leisure travel hub and signals a robust recovery and expansion within the UK package holiday market post-pandemic. For holidaymakers in London and the South East, it promises greater choice and convenience for accessing beloved sunshine destinations from spring 2025 onwards.
