Finding an authentic Guinness at a reasonable price in London can be a challenge, but a new Irish pub in East London is changing that narrative. Moyletts, located in Hackney, has quickly become a local favorite by offering a £5.50 pint of Guinness and traditional Irish spice bags, all while fostering a strong sense of community.
A Dream Realized Against the Odds
Rupert Moylett, a 30-year-old with no prior pub experience, took a significant risk by opening Moyletts in December 2025. Despite the hospitality industry's struggles, with many London pubs closing due to rising costs, Rupert seized the opportunity when the previous owners decided to exit. "I've been dreaming about owning a pub for seven years," he shared. "The logic of making people feel secure to buy your product is similar to my past work as a mechanic, but everything else is completely different."
After six weeks of preparation, the pub opened its doors, featuring a shamrock on the entrance to honor Rupert's Irish heritage. The name Moyletts pays homage to his family surname, which his father hesitated to use on his first business venture.
Affordability and Community at the Core
Moyletts has made a notable impact in Lower Clapton, nestled among residential homes. The £5.50 Guinness attracts patrons, while the Irish spice bags—a hearty mix of chips and Chinese takeaway crafted by ex-Kiln chef Garreth Chambers—draw crowds on weekends. However, Rupert emphasizes that the local community is the heart of the pub's success. "It's a lot of locals spreading the word," he said. "I wanted a community spot where everyone feels welcome, from two-week-old babies to 80-year-old men."
Recognizing changing drinking habits, Rupert aims to create a social environment that doesn't solely rely on alcohol. He is considering initiatives like an evening tea night to promote inclusivity. "I want people to have a nice, long-time here, not just drinking shots," he explained. The pub's downstairs area and kitchen were key factors in his choice of location, enabling a blend of music, food, and socializing.
Building a Vibrant Local Hub
In just four months, Moyletts has established itself as a cultural hub. DJ Jamie Rodigan hosts a monthly residency, and live bands are encouraged to perform, adding to the pub's lively atmosphere. Reviews from patrons highlight the cozy ambiance and welcoming vibe. One reviewer noted, "Lovely independent pub! The new owner has made it much cosier." Rupert takes pride in bringing an authentic London-Irish experience to Clapton, reflecting his upbringing. Initially, his parents were skeptical about his venture, but it has since become a source of family pride. "Now, my mum calls me randomly to chat—I think they're so happy for me," he said.
