A devastating fire has torn through Usain Bolt's popular Tracks & Records restaurant in Jamaica, causing significant damage to the beloved Montego Bay establishment.
Early morning blaze engulfs celebrity restaurant
The fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning at approximately 1am local time at the restaurant located on Montego Bay's vibrant Hip Strip. Staff arriving for work at around 1:45am discovered the building already ablaze, prompting immediate emergency response.
By the time the Jamaica Fire Brigade reached the scene, the upper floor of the building was completely engulfed in flames. Fire crews worked quickly to contain the blaze, though they were unable to prevent extensive damage to the property.
Restaurant's crucial community role during hurricane recovery
The fire comes during a challenging period for the establishment, which had been operating without mains electricity since Hurricane Melissa passed through the region. The restaurant had been relying on generator power to continue its operations.
Notably, Tracks & Records had been supporting World Central Kitchen in preparing daily meals for communities affected by the recent hurricane, highlighting its important role in local disaster relief efforts.
Investigation underway as damage assessed
Acting Superintendent Oneil Kerr, the Jamaica Fire Brigade's lead investigator for St James, confirmed that firefighters brought the situation under control "within a few minutes" of their arrival. However, he acknowledged that the damage to the property was substantial.
The upper floor area, where the fire was confined, housed the main dining room, bar facilities, and restrooms. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the incident.
The restaurant, which first opened its doors in 2018 and specialises in Caribbean cuisine, has become a popular landmark in one of Jamaica's most frequented tourist corridors. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and the establishment remains closed to the public while damage assessments continue.
