FCDO Warns Tourists: Avoid Regions in Thailand, Mexico, Turkey

UK Foreign Office Issues Critical Travel Warnings for Popular Destinations

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has released updated guidance advising British tourists to avoid specific regions in three highly frequented holiday destinations: Thailand, Mexico, and Turkey. This advisory comes as summer 2026 approaches, with the FCDO emphasizing the importance of heeding these warnings to ensure traveler safety.

Turkey: Border Areas Pose Significant Risks

In Turkey, the FCDO strongly advises against all travel within 10 kilometers of the border with Syria. This recommendation is due to the persistent conflict in the region and an elevated threat of terrorism, making these areas particularly hazardous for visitors.

Thailand: Multiple Regions Under Advisory

For Thailand, the FCDO has identified several areas where travel should be avoided or limited to essential purposes only:

  • Southern Thailand near the Malaysia border: The provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and specific districts in Songkhla Province (Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi, Saba Yoi) are affected due to regular attacks. Additionally, the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line through these provinces is not recommended for non-essential travel.
  • Cambodia border region: Travelers should avoid all but essential travel within 20 kilometers of the land border with Cambodia. This follows a conflict that erupted in July 2025, involving rocket and artillery fire, with ongoing hostilities and risks from unexploded landmines.

Mexico: Widespread Advisories Across States

In Mexico, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to numerous states, including Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero, and Chiapas. These warnings are critical for those planning trips, especially with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, where adherence to FCDO guidance is strongly encouraged to mitigate risks.

The FCDO underscores that as holiday planning intensifies, travelers must prioritize safety by consulting official advisories. These updates reflect ongoing security assessments and aim to protect British nationals abroad from potential dangers in these regions.
