Fantaseas Chingford quickly established itself as a regional favorite, with vintage photographs revealing towering exterior slides that promised adrenaline-fueled adventures. The park's electric atmosphere made it particularly popular among local families seeking affordable entertainment. However, this vibrant chapter in London's leisure history would come to an abrupt and tragic end just two years after opening.
The park's closure in 1992 resulted from a devastating convergence of safety failures and financial instability. While numerous theories circulated about the shutdown—including bizarre rumors about vandals placing razor blades in slide tubes—the truth proved far more disturbing.
The Horrific Incident That Changed Everything
According to a 1993 report in the Newcastle Journal, a catastrophic safety failure occurred at Fantaseas Leisure Pool in Chingford when a 12-year-old boy sustained severe internal injuries after sitting directly atop a geyser nozzle. The incident caused compressed air to enter the child's body, resulting in serious damage to his colon.
Thermelek Engineering Services, the company responsible for the water jet system, subsequently pleaded guilty to violating health and safety regulations and received a £5,000 fine. This tragic accident, combined with mounting financial pressures, proved instrumental in the park's permanent closure.
Financial Troubles and Structural Concerns
The Chingford location wasn't alone in its struggles. Fantaseas Dartford faced its own challenges, including concerns about inadequate foundations that couldn't properly support the structure. Management encountered significant difficulties maintaining both facilities simultaneously, with considerable debt accumulating across the franchise.
Although Waltham Forest Council briefly reopened the Chingford location for one additional year, the park ultimately closed permanently in 1992. The site then lay abandoned for an entire decade before undergoing transformation into what is now Larkswood Leisure Centre on New Road.

The Dartford location experienced a similar fate, remaining abandoned but well-maintained under security supervision for nearly ten years. Remarkably, water pumps and other mechanical components received regular maintenance during this period. However, the pristine buildings were eventually demolished in the early 2000s, with the site initially serving as a rubbish tip before being redeveloped into a residential complex featuring 156 homes by 2016.
