Dishoom has officially confirmed plans to open a new restaurant in south London this year, marking its eighth outpost in the capital. The Bombay café group will take over the Grade II-listed Hop Exchange building at 24 Southwark Street, directly opposite Borough Market.
Historic Building Gets New Life
The Hop Exchange, originally built in 1867 as a trading centre for the beer industry, will house Dishoom across two floors in its West Wing, along with a covered verandah. The building's glass-ceilinged interior was previously home to Bavarian beer hall Katzenjammers, which closed in August 2025 after 16 years of trading. Currently used mainly as office space, the building is set to be transformed into a vibrant dining destination.
Plans Submitted Last Year
Dishoom submitted plans to Southwark Council last year, proposing a brand-new venue that would bring its signature dishes—such as black daal, gunpowder potatoes, and bacon naan rolls—to the Borough area. The group said it is looking forward to 'becoming part of the neighbourhood and welcoming guests later this year', according to Restaurant magazine.
Expanding Empire
This will be Dishoom's 11th venue overall, following the launch of its first Leeds restaurant next month. The chain's first Mumbai-inspired café opened in Covent Garden in 2010, and it has since expanded to Carnaby, Shoreditch, Canary Wharf, Kensington, Battersea, King's Cross, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Brighton. Its first international venture, heading to New York, is slated to open in 2027.
No Official Opening Date Yet
Dishoom has not yet revealed an official opening date for its new London Bridge restaurant, but confirmed it will open later this year. The announcement has generated excitement among fans of the brand, who have been eagerly awaiting a south London location.
