Tragic Balcony Collapse Claims Father's Life on Family Holiday
A British father-of-two died in a horrific fall when a wooden balcony bannister suddenly collapsed during a family holiday in Lanzarote. Darren Silcox, 56, from Cwmbran, Gwent, was enjoying the sunshine at Galeon Playa Apartments when the tragic incident occurred around 1.30am.
Fatal Fall in Hotel Atrium
Silcox and another man, aged 54, both fell approximately 20 feet into the atrium stairwell following the wooden bannister's failure. Emergency services attended the scene, but Silcox was pronounced dead two hours later after sustaining catastrophic injuries.
According to Gwent Coroner's Court, preliminary investigations revealed Silcox died from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures and skull lacerations caused by the fall. Area coroner Rose Farmer confirmed she was opening an inquest due to death from injuries sustained in a fall.
Tributes Pour In for Local Businessman
The community in Cwmbran has been left devastated by the loss of the popular local businessman, who operated two shops in the town called Silcox Stores. Customers and friends have described him as a wonderful man and great guy ahead of his funeral later this month.
One regular customer shared: He was always so lovely to speak to in the shop, this really saddened me when I saw the news.
Ongoing Safety Investigation
The Spanish civil guard is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal balcony collapse. Authorities are reportedly focusing on whether inadequate maintenance or safety measures contributed to the tragic incident.
The second victim, a 54-year-old man, received immediate medical attention before being transported to the intensive care unit at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.
The inquest has been adjourned until a full hearing scheduled for July 20, 2026, as investigations continue into the safety standards at the popular tourist accommodation.
