A beloved southeast London fish and chip shop has secured its place among Britain's elite, reaching the final stages of a prestigious national competition that will crown the country's best takeaway.
From Local Favourite to National Contender
Brockley's Rock, located on Brockley Road in SE4, has successfully advanced to the top 10 shortlist for the 2026 National Fish and Chip Awards. This marks a significant achievement for the capital, as only two London establishments made the original 20-strong longlist when nominations began.
The shop's journey to national recognition gained momentum last month when it earned the title of best chippy in London, defeating competition from across the capital. Stone Fish and Chips in Acton was the other London representative initially nominated, but Brockley's Rock has progressed further in the competition.
Sustainable Success Story
Since opening in 2014, Brockley's Rock has built a loyal local following through its commitment to quality and sustainability. Residents consistently praise its golden, crisp fish and perfectly seasoned chips, alongside an increasingly rare feature in the industry: reasonable prices.
The menu caters to diverse dietary requirements with vegan and gluten-free options available, while maintaining traditional favourites. A standard battered cod costs £10.30, with regular chips priced at £3.60.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, emphasised the significance of the achievement: "Fish and chips is a national treasure, and the skill, passion, resilience and desire to serve communities with the best food shown by the takeaways we've announced today is a great representation of what makes our industry so special."
The Final Challenge Ahead
The competition now intensifies as Brockley's Rock prepares to battle nine other finalists from northern England, Scotland and southern England for the national title. The judging process will include a surprise visit from industry experts and a detailed interview with the awards panel.
The National Fish and Chip Awards evaluates establishments on comprehensive criteria including flavour, freshness, and customer service, ensuring the winner truly represents excellence across all aspects of the fish and chip experience.
The current champion, Yarm Road Fish & Chips in Darlington, will hand over the coveted trophy to the 2026 winner during a ceremony at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on February 25, 2026.
