Parents in London can now locate pubs with playgrounds thanks to a new free app created by a Dalston father. The app, named Pubs With Playgrounds, was developed by television producer Alistair Duncan and includes a database of nearly 1,000 pubs across the UK, each tagged for amenities such as outdoor play areas, highchairs, kids' menus, and cask ales.
From shared map to full app
Duncan initially started the project as a shared Google Map with friends, who contributed entries whenever they discovered a particularly kid-friendly pub. After his appendix burst in January, he used his recovery time to build the app, aiming to help parents across the UK enjoy a pint without sacrificing their children's entertainment.
The app lists pubs with features like treehouses, big slides, mud kitchens, and swing sets, making them appealing destinations for families. However, London users may notice a scarcity of city pubs with even a small playground, as many family-friendly venues are located in the green belt beyond the city's edges.
Central London options available
Despite the limited options, the app highlights several relatively central pubs, including Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, Manor Park's Golden Fleece, Ealing's The Duke of Kent, and Norwood's The Rosendale. These venues offer space for children to play while parents enjoy a full conversation without interruptions.
Duncan hopes to build a community of users who can contribute their own recommendations, ensuring the app grows and remains useful. Pubs With Playgrounds is available for free download on iPhone and Android.
