Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 download codes for PlayStation 5 will carry regional restrictions in several territories, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, South Korea, and North America. This policy, detailed on Rockstar's updated support page, means that players attempting to purchase codes from another country will be unable to redeem them on a UK PlayStation account. The restrictions apply to both physical boxed copies—which will not include a disc—and digital purchases.

Regional Lockdown Details

According to Rockstar's support documentation, codes bought in the UK are country-locked, preventing redemption through accounts from other regions. The same limitation applies to codes from Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and North America. For Japan, an additional constraint exists: codes expire 170 days after issuance. For instance, a code obtained on the Japanese launch date of November 19, 2026, must be redeemed by May 7, 2027, or it will become invalid due to regional regulations.

The full list of restricted regions includes: Brazil; LATAM (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay); North America (Canada, United States); South Korea; Japan; United Kingdom; Saudi Arabia & UAE; Rest of Asia (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand); and Rest of EMEA and Asia (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine).

Xbox Remains Unrestricted

Importantly, these restrictions do not apply to Xbox Series X/S versions. Rockstar confirmed that Xbox codes are not region-locked, allowing players to purchase and redeem codes from any region worldwide. This disparity highlights a growing divergence in platform policies as the industry moves toward digital distribution.

Pre-Load and Launch Dates

Rockstar also announced that pre-loading for GTA 6 will begin on November 12, 2026, for those who pre-order either a digital or physical copy. The game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The region-locking of PS5 codes has sparked debate, especially as Sony plans to discontinue physical discs after 2027, raising concerns about consumer control over digital purchases. A Rockstar spokesperson stated, "These restrictions are in place due to regional regulations and are designed to ensure compliance with local laws."
