Citigroup has named BNP Paribas' Ahmed as the new head of its UK financial institutions group (FIG) deals, according to a memo seen by Financial News. The appointment, effective immediately, underscores Citi's commitment to strengthening its advisory capabilities in the UK's financial sector.
Strategic Move to Bolster FIG Advisory
Ahmed, who previously led FIG coverage at BNP Paribas, brings over 15 years of experience advising banks, insurers, and asset managers on mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, and strategic restructuring. His expertise will be pivotal as Citi looks to expand its market share in the competitive UK FIG landscape.
In his new role, Ahmed will report to James Fleming, Citi's head of UK investment banking, and will work closely with the global FIG team to serve clients across the UK and Europe. He replaces Sarah Smith, who moved to a senior role within Citi's corporate banking division earlier this year.
Industry Context and Competitive Pressures
The hire comes at a time when investment banks are vying for mandates in the UK's financial services sector, which is undergoing significant transformation due to regulatory changes, digital disruption, and the post-Brexit landscape. According to Dealogic data, UK FIG M&A volumes reached $45.2 billion in the first half of 2023, a 12% increase year-on-year, highlighting the robustness of the market.
"Ahmed's deep relationships and proven track record in FIG will be instrumental in driving our UK franchise forward," said Fleming in the memo. "His appointment reflects our commitment to investing in top talent and providing exceptional advice to our clients."
Ahmed's Background and Expertise
During his tenure at BNP Paribas, Ahmed advised on several landmark deals, including the £3.6 billion merger of two UK insurance firms and the £1.2 billion IPO of a fintech company. He also played a key role in cross-border transactions, leveraging his understanding of European regulatory frameworks.
Prior to BNP Paribas, Ahmed worked at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, where he focused on financial institutions coverage. He holds an MBA from London Business School and is a CFA charterholder.
Impact on Citi's UK Operations
This strategic hire is expected to enhance Citi's ability to capture high-value FIG mandates, particularly in the insurance and asset management subsectors. With Ahmed's leadership, Citi aims to increase its ranking in UK FIG M&A advisory, where it currently holds the eighth position, according to Refinitiv.
Industry analysts view this move as a positive signal for Citi's broader investment banking strategy in Europe. "Bringing in a seasoned banker like Ahmed demonstrates Citi's intent to compete aggressively for top-tier FIG deals," said a senior M&A lawyer at a leading City firm, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Future Outlook
As the UK financial services industry adapts to new regulations and digital innovation, the demand for strategic advice is set to grow. Citi's investment in senior talent positions it well to capitalize on these opportunities. The bank has also recently expanded its technology, media, and telecom (TMT) team, indicating a broader push to strengthen its advisory services across key sectors.
Ahmed's appointment will be officially announced to clients and the wider market in the coming weeks. He will be based in Citi's London office at Canary Wharf, where he will lead a team of 12 FIG bankers.
