Arsenal have ruled out a summer move for Julian Alvarez after learning the Atletico Madrid star only wants a move to Barcelona. The Gunners had made the Argentina international a top transfer target, with Mikel Arteta eager to add another forward following their first Premier League title in 22 years.
Alvarez's Barcelona dream
Paris Saint-Germain have also discussed a move, but Alvarez's preference has always been a switch to the Camp Nou. Barcelona have already angered Atletico with what they regard as a public and disrespectful pursuit of the 26-year-old.
An opening bid of €100 million (£86.4m) has been rejected by Atletico, who are determined not to do business with Barcelona. The Spanish club have tried to convince Alvarez to join Arsenal instead.
Swap deal rejected
Atletico explored a deal that would see Alvarez join Arsenal in exchange for €60 million (£51.7m) plus Viktor Gyokeres. However, Alvarez reportedly turned down any move to north London.
According to SPORT, Arsenal have now 'completely ruled out' a move for the former Manchester City star and will pursue other targets.
Player speaks out
Alvarez broke his silence this week, making it clear he wants to leave Atletico. 'I spoke with the people I needed to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,' Alvarez said after Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria.
Alternative targets
Arsenal have also explored a move for Bournemouth star Junior Kroupi this summer. Kroupi enjoyed a superb first Premier League season after his £10m move from Lorient, scoring 13 goals. Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG, and Bayern Munich are also interested, with a reported €100 million (£86m) price tag.
