Microsoft has released the Surface Laptop 8, a direct successor to the 2024 seventh edition, featuring Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon X2 Plus or Elite chips. The new model boasts snappy performance, long battery life, and a haptic touchpad that supports Windows 11's haptic signals feature. However, due to rising memory and chip costs, the starting price has increased by £400 to £1,449 (€1,699; $1,600; A$2,799).
Design and Display
The exterior remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, with a solid aluminium body, a satisfying keyboard, and a crisp 120Hz LCD screen available in 13.8-inch or 15-inch sizes. New colour options include an attractive jade green. The display supports HDR and Dolby Vision but has a glossy coating prone to glare under office lights. Speakers are clear at high volumes but lack bass.
Haptic Touchpad and Keyboard
The Surface Laptop 8 is among the first to support Windows 11's haptic signals feature. The generous haptic touchpad provides tactile feedback, such as a tap when mousing over the close button or snapping a window, enhancing the user experience. The keyboard remains excellent, with well-spaced keys and good travel.
Performance and Battery Life
The Snapdragon X2 Elite version tested is 16-20% faster in single-core performance and about 10% faster in graphics than the previous generation. It handles everyday tasks and light gaming smoothly, though it still lags behind Apple's M5 MacBook Air. The machine runs silently most of the time, with fans only audible under heavy load. Battery life is a standout feature: the laptop lasted nearly 14 hours in a mixed workload test involving Chrome tabs, Evernote, photo editing, and chat apps. Most users can expect two days of light use or a full day of demanding tasks on a single charge.
Connectivity and Ports
The laptop includes two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a headphone jack, and Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port. However, in the UK and EU, the Surface Connect port is essentially useless because the machine does not ship with a charger; users must buy Microsoft's £80 power supply separately. A full charge via USB-C using a 100W charger (not included) takes about 100 minutes.
Windows 11 and ARM Compatibility
The Surface Laptop 8 runs Windows 11 for ARM, offering a clean, bloatware-free experience. Microsoft's AI tools are included, with the Click to Do feature being particularly useful: holding the Windows button allows users to interact directly with text and images on screen. Most apps run natively or via the Prism emulation layer, which handles x64 programs transparently. Emulated apps like Evernote can be sluggish, and some multiplayer games with anti-cheat software may not work, though recent updates have enabled Fortnite and other popular titles.
Sustainability
The laptop is repairable, with a replaceable SSD and service guides available. It includes recycled aluminium, cobalt, copper, gold, rare-earth metals, and tin. Microsoft offers trade-in and recycling schemes and publishes out-of-warranty repair costs and environmental impact reports.
Pricing and Verdict
The Surface Laptop 8 starts at £1,449 for the Snapdragon X2 Plus variant with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, while X2 Elite models begin at £1,549. The price increase due to RAMageddon makes it about £500 more than expected, but the overall package remains compelling. The laptop excels in build quality, display, keyboard, trackpad, and battery life, offering a premium Windows experience with minimal compromise. However, limited ports, the useless Surface Connect port in some regions, and lingering ARM compatibility issues are drawbacks.
