The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2025. Olivia tops the girls' list for the tenth consecutive year, while Muhammad, Noah, and Leo lead for boys. Leo pushed Oliver out of the top three.
Girls' names: Olivia leads, Lily rises
A total of 2,386 baby girls were named Olivia in 2025, making it the most popular girls' name in three of nine English regions and in Wales. However, its popularity is declining, down from a peak of 5,204 in 2016. Lily took second place with 2,249, overtaking Amelia (2,153). Isla (1,959) and Florence (1,924) complete the top five.
Boys' names: Muhammad tops, Luca climbs
Muhammad was the most popular boys' name in four of nine English regions, with 5,957 newborns given the name. It ranked 34th in Wales. Noah followed with 4,075, Leo with 3,278, Luca with 3,266, and Arthur with 3,211. Luca was the fastest-growing boys' name, with 452 more babies named Luca in 2025 than in 2024, moving from seventh to fourth.
New entries and rising stars
New additions to the top 100 include Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah, and Frankie for girls; and Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben for boys. For girls, Mabel was the fastest-growing name, with an extra 414 babies, rising from 37th to 16th. Ada climbed 54 places, Maeve and Charlotte each rose 24. For boys, Roman rose 33 places, Harry 26, and Finley 25.
Names falling out of fashion
Girls' names dropping out of the top 100 include Jessica (down 44 places), Ellie (down 31), and Amelia (down 22). Boys' names that fell off the list include Bodhi (down 18), Grayson (down 14), and Brody (down seven).
There were 585,396 live births in England and Wales in 2025: 284,681 female and 300,715 male. The rankings are based on exact spellings at birth registration; similar names with different spellings are counted separately.
