National Highways confirmed that the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed until at least early afternoon while Sussex Police conduct a crash investigation. The force stated that the southbound carriageway is likely to be closed all morning following the collision.
Drivers face severe delays as traffic backs up in both directions, with congestion reaching junction 10. People traveling to London Gatwick Airport, the UK's second busiest airport, are advised to allow extra time and use alternative routes.
Police appeal for witnesses
