Waiters race through Soho streets balancing trays
On Sunday July 19, 2026, Soho hosted its annual Village Fête, featuring the legendary Waiters' Race. Photographer Chris Bethell captured the chaotic scenes as waiters in uniforms sprinted an 800m loop through narrow streets, balancing a bottle of fizz and a glass on a tray. The race, dating back to the 1950s, begins and ends at the French House. Participants must hold their tray with one hand, using two hands for no more than three paces to steady items. Crowds lined the route along Dean Street, Soho Square, Greek Street, and Romilly Street.
Winner takes home Waiters Cup and £100
The winner receives the coveted Waiters Cup, a cash prize of £100, and glory in the hospitality world. The race is part of the 51st edition of the Soho Village Fête, held in St Anne's Gardens off Wardour Street. Other eccentric events include a dog show, spaghetti-eating contest, tug-of-war between Soho police and fire service, morris dancers, snail racing, and a human fruit machine.
According to Time Out, the race rules encourage waiters to 'look the part,' though attire has evolved from starched whites to anything goes, including topless runners. The event draws large crowds and often results in smashed glasses by the finish line.
