Wild Swimming Spot Near London: Perfect for Heatwave Days
Wild Swimming Near London: Frensham Great Pond

With blistering weather predicted to last the rest of the bank holiday weekend, minds will inevitably turn to the finest ways to beat the heat. As the mercury soars to 32C and clear skies are forecast, why not plunge into one of Britain's top wild swimming locations?

Frensham Great Pond: A Family-Friendly Oasis

Highlighted by Country Living, Frensham Great Pond is celebrated for its sandy beaches and shallow waters, and has been hailed as an ideal family day out. Initially built in the 13th century for fish supply, you're far more likely to encounter bathers these days at the Green Flag Award-winning location.

During spells of fine weather, the pond gets exceptionally crowded, with guests cautioned that the car park typically reaches capacity by 10am, reports Surrey Live. Should you secure a spot, what awaits is a sandy bank and invigorating waters. Bathers are restricted to two designated zones with a maximum depth of 1.4m, while angling and boating activities occupy the remainder of the water.

Water Quality and Safety

At its most recent assessment, the water quality achieved an excellent rating, though the location has experienced blue-green algae during warmer months. Should elevated algae concentrations be detected during the bathing period, the pond could be shut, so checking ahead of your visit is essential.

Facilities and Activities

Beyond the swimming areas lies a large sandy bank which children love to play in. The site also features toilets and a cafe offering hot and cold drinks, ice-creams, burgers, bacon rolls, chips, cakes, buckets and spades. There is far more to explore in the area than the pond alone. Frensham Great Pond and Common spans approximately 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of woodland and heathland.

The site is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and constitutes an internationally rare habitat, home to a diverse range of wildlife, including sand lizards, Dartford warblers and nightjars. This makes it ideal for a variety of lengthy walks that will take you well away from the bustling pond. Nearby Frensham Little Pond is also worth a visit, where there is more sand and children are welcome to bring their fishing nets and enjoy pond dipping.

Parking and Transport

Car parks provide easy access to both ponds, though parking does come at a cost:

  • £2 up to 1 hour
  • £4 up to 2 hours
  • £6 up to 4 hours
  • £9 all day

Alternatively, you can reach the area by public transport, with bus route 19 running from Farnham Station to Haslemere Station, stopping directly opposite Frensham Pond.
