Parliament Hill Lido forced to close again after 'inappropriate behaviour'
Parliament Hill Lido closes again over 'inappropriate behaviour'

Parliament Hill Lido, a popular outdoor pool in North London, has been forced to close again for evening sessions on Thursday, June 25, and Friday, June 26, due to what the City of London Corporation described as 'inappropriate behaviour' by a minority of visitors. The decision comes during a heatwave, with temperatures soaring across the capital.

Multiple incidents prompt closure

The lido, located on Hampstead Heath, has experienced several anti-social incidents this summer. An 'unacceptable' brawl on the second May Bank Holiday led to two arrests and a temporary closure. The following week, all children under 16 unaccompanied by adults were banned after further trouble.

Last week, the City of London Corporation, which manages the Heath, introduced extra security patrols, but these measures have failed to curb the behaviour. An email to users stated: 'After careful consideration, we have decided not to run evening sessions on Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26. This is in response to inappropriate behaviour by a minority of visitors, and to ensure the health and safety of the swimming community.'

Safety concerns for staff and swimmers

A spokesperson for the City of London Corporation said the decision was driven by 'poor behaviour on too many evenings recently'. The Parliament Hill Lido Users Group posted on Instagram, expressing regret: 'Due to poor behaviour on too many evenings recently, the management have taken the decision to CLOSE after the afternoon session today and tomorrow. We know that many of you will be disappointed but for the safety of our staff and customers this decision has been taken.'

The lido will close at the end of the afternoon on both days and reopen for the morning session the following day.

Crackdown on other Heath areas

In addition to the lido closures, the City of London Corporation is cracking down on crowds entering non-swimming ponds during the heatwave. In late May, a video showed dozens of people cooling off in a wildlife pond just 12 days after cygnets had nested. Only the lido and three designated bathing ponds are permitted for swimming.

Alderman Jones told MyLondon: 'As well as our own constabulary, we've put additional security and patrols in place across the Heath, particularly around the lido and Model Boating Pond. Fires and barbecues are strictly prohibited due to the very real risk they pose to people, wildlife, and the wider landscape. We want everyone to enjoy the Heath, so please behave responsibly, and respect the space and those who care for it. Every visitor is also a 'Heath Guardian'.'
