Car clubs return to South London after Zipcar exit

Car-sharing clubs are making a comeback in South London following Zipcar's departure from the entire UK market last December. Southwark Council has announced three new partnerships with HiyaCar, Enterprise, and Co-wheels, which are set to provide 30 rental vehicles in the first phase of the scheme.

New partnerships and vehicle rollout

The initiative will start with HiyaCar bringing 10 vehicles, Enterprise contributing 15, and Co-wheels adding 5 cars. These will be stationed in bays stretching from London Bridge to Dulwich. Southwark Council offered free parking spaces to attract the car clubs, a move aimed at encouraging their operation in the borough.

Council leader James McAsh said the car clubs will “make a huge difference” for residents. The authority had previously offered Zipcar 200 free parking spaces last December in an effort to retain the service, but the company chose to exit the UK market due to cost pressures.

Role of car clubs in Southwark

According to council officials, car clubs play a vital role because approximately 60% of Southwark households do not own a car. The clubs are primarily used by residents who need to drive occasionally. By reducing the demand for private vehicle ownership, car clubs help cut pollution, save money, and support sustainable transport options.

Demand for the new services will be monitored during the first phase before considering whether to increase the number of vehicles. Cllr James McAsh stated: “I’m delighted to welcome car clubs back to Southwark – they make a huge difference to our residents. By helping to cut demand for private vehicle ownership, car clubs cut pollution, save money, and help create a great place to walk, wheel or cycle.”

Future plans and community impact

The council’s Streets for People plan aims to create better streets for all, and the car club partnerships are part of this broader strategy. The availability of shared vehicles is expected to provide flexible mobility options for residents, particularly those who do not own a car but require occasional access to a vehicle for errands, trips, or other needs.
