A devastating rail accident investigation has concluded that an 11-year-old schoolboy was using his mobile phone when he was tragically struck and killed by a train at a level crossing.
The incident, which occurred in January 2024, involved Jaiden Shehata, who was hit by a train travelling at approximately 70mph while crossing the railway line in Meldreth, Cambridgeshire.
Critical Safety Warnings Issued
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report highlighted the boy's distraction as a key factor in the tragedy. According to investigators, Jaiden was looking at his phone screen while attempting to cross the railway line, failing to notice the approaching train until it was too late.
Simon French, the Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents, emphasised the dangers of distraction at railway crossings: "This heartbreaking incident demonstrates how quickly tragedy can strike when attention is divided, even for a moment."
Community in Mourning
The local community has been left reeling by the loss of the young boy, described by friends and teachers as a bright and popular student. Floral tributes and messages have been left near the crossing site, with many expressing shock and grief over the preventable nature of the accident.
Local resident Margaret Thompson, who lives near the crossing, told reporters: "We've all used that crossing for years, but this has made everyone stop and think. It's every parent's worst nightmare."

The RAIB has issued urgent recommendations following the investigation:
