Londoners Stunned by Mysterious Orange Sky: Fire at Peckham Station Revealed
London's Orange Sky Mystery Solved: Peckham Track Fire

Residents across London were left bewildered and searching for answers on Monday night as a series of intense, orange flashes illuminated the capital's sky.

A City Baffled by Blinding Light

From the South Bank to Camberwell, social media erupted with reports of an "insanely bright" glow that grew stronger throughout the evening. The mysterious spectacle prompted widespread speculation, with some Londoners joking that the apocalypse had chosen to begin at Elephant and Castle, while others wondered if a massive rave was the source.

The reality, however, was far more serious. The source of the dramatic light show was a significant blaze on railway tracks near Queen’s Road Peckham station. The fire broke out approximately 200 metres from the end of the platform, close to the boundary with South Bermondsey station.

Emergency Response and Service Disruption

London Fire Brigade mobilised a substantial response to tackle the incident. A total of three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. To ensure their safety, train services in both directions were temporarily halted and the power to the tracks was isolated.

The scale of the fire was evident from the volume of calls received by emergency services. At the height of the incident, the Brigade’s 999 Control officers took 90 calls from concerned members of the public. The first alert came in at 8.49pm on January 13, 2026, with crews working to bring the flames under control by 11.30pm.

The damage was substantial, with a half-metre section of the railway track completely destroyed by the flames.

Resolution and Return to Normal

Fortunately, the London Fire Brigade confirmed that there were no reports of any injuries related to the fire. Following the successful extinguishing of the blaze and necessary safety checks, train services were able to resume their normal schedule.

The event served as a stark reminder of how incidents in one part of the vast city can capture the attention and imagination of millions, transforming a local emergency into a capital-wide talking point almost instantly.
