Met Police officers in Clapham and Vauxhall have been granted special powers for parts of this weekend following a series of robberies. The Section 60AA order, authorised by Inspector Darren Watson, allows uniformed officers to require the removal of face coverings when there are reasonable grounds to suspect they are being worn to conceal identity.
The powers take effect on Clapham High Street from 10pm tonight (Friday, August 21) until 4am tomorrow morning (Saturday, August 22). In Vauxhall, they apply between 2am and 10am tomorrow. The measure is not a Section 60 stop and search power, meaning no additional stop and search powers are granted.
Purpose of the order
Inspector Watson explained the rationale behind the decision: "We have authorised an order in Clapham and Vauxhall that allows officers to require the removal of face coverings where there are reasonable grounds to suspect they are being worn to conceal identity."
He added that the order follows information indicating that some individuals are using face coverings to hide their identities while committing robberies and thefts, and to avoid identification. The powers are intended to disrupt such activity and assist in identifying offenders.
Balancing enforcement and respect
Inspector Watson emphasised that any use of the powers must be lawful, proportionate and intelligence-led. He acknowledged that face coverings may be worn for legitimate reasons, and said those cases will be treated appropriately and respectfully.
He also stressed the importance of community engagement: "We will continue to work closely with local communities, businesses and partners to tackle crime and ensure Clapham and Vauxhall remain safe places to live, work and visit."
The Met Police have not specified how many officers will be deployed or how long the order will remain in place beyond the stated weekend hours. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to be aware of the temporary measures.
