London's public transport network is set for a significant period of disruption throughout December 2025, with a series of planned closures and engineering works affecting multiple lines.
Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that maintenance work will primarily take place on weekends, but some longer weekday closures will also impact early morning and late-night travellers. Passengers are being strongly advised to use the TfL journey planner before setting out, especially during the volatile period between Christmas and New Year's Eve when services are subject to frequent changes.
London Underground Line Closures
The Tube network will see several key routes suspended. On the Metropolitan line, there will be no service between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge on Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7. A further closure is scheduled for Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, between Rickmansworth and Amersham/Chesham.
The Northern line will be affected on Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7, with no daytime service running from Archway to High Barnet.
Passengers on the Piccadilly line face the most extensive disruptions. There will be no service from Acton Town to Uxbridge on the weekend of December 6-7. A more prolonged closure will then see the Rayners Lane to Uxbridge branch shut down from Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, through to Sunday, January 4.
Overground and National Rail Impact
The London Overground network, recently rebranded with new line names, will experience over twenty separate disruptions. Key dates include Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, when there will be no service on the entire Liberty, Lioness, and Suffragette lines.
The Mildmay line will see a series of closures, including no service between Camden Road and Stratford after 10:15pm on Sunday, December 21, and a major shutdown from Saturday, December 27 to Sunday, January 4 between Camden Road and Richmond/Shepherd’s Bush.
The Weaver line will be heavily impacted around the Christmas period, with no service from Liverpool Street to Enfield Town/Cheshunt/Chingford until 10:15am on Sunday, December 21, and no service on the entire line on Boxing Day.
The Elizabeth line will also see alterations. There will be no stops at Acton Main Line, Hanwell, and West Ealing after 10:30pm from Monday, December 1 to Wednesday, December 3. On several Sundays throughout the month, there will be no service from Paddington to Ealing Broadway until the late morning. Crucially, there will be no Elizabeth line service at all on Boxing Day.
DLR and Final Travel Advice
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) will operate an altered timetable with suspensions on various weekends. Key closures affect the Tower Gateway to Shadwell section on Sundays December 7, 14, 21, and on Boxing Day. The Prince Regent to Beckton route will be closed on Saturday, December 13.
With such widespread works planned, TfL is urging all passengers to check their journey meticulously in advance to minimise travel headaches during the busy festive season.
