A two-year-old boy has tragically died and five other people have sustained serious injuries following a devastating collision on the A1 motorway in Cambridgeshire.
Details of the A1 Motorway Incident
The fatal crash occurred on Saturday evening at approximately 6.20pm on the A1 northbound, just past the Stibbington junction. According to Cambridgeshire Police, a Toyota Auris that had broken down and was stationary in a live lane was struck by a Volkswagen Touran.
The young victim, a two-year-old boy from London, was one of six passengers inside the Toyota at the time of the impact. The five other occupants, also from London, were all rushed to Peterborough City Hospital for treatment of what police described as serious injuries.
Arrest and Police Investigation
A 64-year-old man, who was driving the Volkswagen involved in the collision, has been arrested. He was taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The suspect, who suffered minor injuries himself, has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. He is required to return to the police on 20 March.
Cambridgeshire Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash. Officers are urgently appealing to the public for assistance.
Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Sergeant David McIlwhan, who is leading the investigation, expressed his condolences and outlined the need for information. "Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision," he said. "The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers."
He continued with a direct appeal: "I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage but was unable to stop at the scene, to get in touch."
Police are asking any motorists who were travelling on that section of the A1 around the time of the incident, particularly those with dashcams, to review their footage and contact them immediately.
