A motorist has been taken into custody after allegedly deploying a taser against a member of the public who attempted to prevent him escaping from a hit-and-run incident in East London.
Chaotic Scene in Residential Street
Police were called to Stewart Avenue in Upminster at 4.20pm on Tuesday following reports that a vehicle had failed to stop after a collision. Witnesses described to local media how the car first struck several bins before finally coming to a halt.
Quick-thinking bystanders intervened to prevent the driver from leaving the scene, with one individual reportedly seizing the motorist's bag. In response, the driver allegedly retrieved a non-police issue taser and used it against a man in his 50s.
Injuries and Emergency Response
The man targeted with the taser required treatment from paramedics at the location. A second casualty, a pedestrian described as a woman in her 50s, also received medical attention from ambulance crews.
Fortunately, neither injured party required hospital transfer, with both being treated sufficiently at the roadside. The swift arrival of emergency services ensured both victims received prompt medical assessment.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Metropolitan Police officers made a swift arrest nearby, detaining a man believed to be both the driver of the vehicle and the individual responsible for deploying the taser.
The suspect remains in police custody facing multiple serious allegations including:
- Causing injury through a road traffic collision
- Failing to stop at the scene of an accident
- Grievous bodily harm
- Possession of a firearm
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed the ongoing nature of the investigation, noting that residents should expect an increased police presence in the Upminster area over the coming days as enquiries continue.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Met on 101. The case highlights concerns about weapon possession and road safety in residential communities.
