Major Speed Reduction Planned for Dangerous Border Road
Surrey County Council has announced dramatic plans to slash speed limits on a key road straddling the Croydon and Surrey border. The proposed changes would see the current 60mph limit on the B269 Limpsfield Road reduced to 40mph for a significant stretch exceeding two miles.
This substantial 20mph reduction follows serious safety concerns raised by council engineers regarding collision frequency and excessive vehicle speeds along this route.
Collision Statistics Reveal Urgent Need for Action
An in-depth analysis of crash data uncovered 10 serious collisions and 12 minor injury incidents occurring on this road segment within the last three years alone. The affected section runs approximately 2.63 miles between Warlingham and Oxted.
In a particularly tragic incident that occurred too recently for inclusion in these statistics, a woman died in a single-vehicle crash on April 23. The collision happened around 11.30am between Ledgers Road Junction and Beech Farm Junction, in the Chelsham area heading out of Warlingham beyond Knights Garden Centre.
Emergency services pronounced the female driver dead at the scene following the morning accident.
Precise Location of Proposed 40mph Zone
The council has completed a formal speed limit assessment and is now pushing forward with implementing the 40mph restriction. The new limit would be specifically enforced from a point roughly 17 metres southwest of the junction with D1356 High Lane to approximately 54 metres northeast of the junction with C75 The Ridge.
This safety initiative represents one of the most significant speed reductions proposed in the area recently, directly responding to both statistical evidence and recent tragic events on this border road.
