East London Gang Jailed 92 Years for Drug Line

A criminal gang that flooded Bethnal Green with crack cocaine and heroin has been sentenced to a combined 92 years in prison. The Metropolitan Police investigation, codenamed 'Specs', led to the conviction of 16 individuals following a two-year probe into one of East London's largest drug supply operations.

Drug Line Supplied Thousands of Addicts

The gang operated a dedicated drugs line that sold Class A substances to thousands of addicts across Tower Hamlets. Over two years, they distributed approximately 14 kilograms of heroin and crack cocaine, causing widespread harm to the community. Ringleaders Nefur Miah, 38, and Muhammed Ismail Ali, 38, received the longest sentences: 17 years and seven months, and 12 years and six months, respectively.

Police Investigation Triggered by Community Concerns

The Metropolitan Police launched the operation after a surge in reports from residents about open drug dealing on street corners and in children's parks. The increase in crime left the Bethnal Green community feeling unsafe. Officers first targeted street-level runners before moving up the chain of command to dismantle the entire network.

Plain-clothed officers followed known gang members, who brazenly sold drugs to users in broad daylight. Detectives used this surveillance to build a comprehensive picture of the gang's hierarchy. Despite attempts to evade monitoring by regularly switching off mobile phones, police conducted detailed analysis of call records and location data from more than 50 phones linked to the group.

Stash House Raid Uncovered Drugs, Cash, and Firearms

The phone evidence led officers to a stash address in Barking, which was raided in 2022. During the search, police seized significant quantities of Class A drugs, cash, and three firearms belonging to the gang. The weapons charges added to the severity of the sentences handed down on Tuesday, May 12.

PC Shah Haque, who led the investigation, said: “The streets of London will be safer with this gang behind bars. I hope the long sentences provide reassurance to the community in Bethnal Green and beyond that we will work relentlessly to pursue the groups who bring drugs, weapons and violence to our communities. The sheer scale of our investigation – two years of detailed analysis of phones as well as covert surveillance – shows the scale of the criminality and our commitment to getting these dangerous people off our streets.”
