Plans have been revealed for a rooftop pool atop London's iconic BT Tower, as part of proposals to transform the landmark into a luxury hotel. The pool would be installed on the tower's roof, offering unprecedented public access to the top of the structure for the first time in nearly 50 years.
BT Tower's Transformation
The BT Tower, which first opened as a communications centre in 1964, was purchased by American hotel chain MCR Hotels in 2024. Initially, renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick was involved in the project, but he has since stepped back. Shoreditch-based architecture firm Orms, known for the Outernet project, is now leading the design.
MCR and Orms have unveiled plans to create a new publicly accessible square around the site and install a swimming pool on the rooftop. The proposals aim to make the top of the tower and its podium buildings accessible to the public for the first time in decades.
Public Consultation
On the consultation website, MCR stated its intention to bring the BT Tower into public use through a hotel-led, mixed-use development that celebrates the building's heritage and complements Fitzrovia's historic character. The company is seeking public feedback before finalising the plans.
Public exhibitions will be held on the evenings of May 11 and 12, and at lunchtime on May 16, at UCL's Jeremy Bentham Room. Attendees can view the plans and share their opinions via feedback forms.
