Walton-on-the-Naze: Quiet Essex Beach Town 90 Mins from London

Walton-on-the-Naze, a little-known seaside town on the Essex coast, is gaining attention as a peaceful alternative to crowded resorts like Southend and Brighton. Located just 90 minutes from London Liverpool Street by train, it offers golden beaches, independent shops, and a friendly community atmosphere.

Easy Access from London

The fastest trains from Liverpool Street take just 1 hour 20 minutes, with tickets costing as little as £18 each way on the day. The station is only a five-minute walk from the beach, making it convenient for day trippers without a car. Slower trains are also available, but the journey remains under two hours.

Local Charm and Character

Kay, owner of Sea La Vie, an independent clothing and jewellery store, moved to Walton about a year and a half ago because homes are "so much cheaper" there. She told EssexLive: "There are lots of local, loyal customers who visit the shop often. The people in Walton are just really, really friendly and so supportive." She added: "The beach is just lovely, too. We have a lot of visitors who travel from Southend because our beach is quieter and sandier!"

Jo and Graham, owners of Beside the Seaside Café, which opened just a few weeks ago, echoed that sentiment. Jo said: "Locals are so very friendly and very supportive. We've also had lots of support from local businesses with the opening of the cafe, which has been so helpful - they've taken us under their wing."

Natural Attractions and Activities

The Naze cliffs are renowned for their geological and biological significance, offering opportunities for fossil hunting, particularly ancient sharks' teeth. The nearby Naze Nature Discovery Centre is ideal for birdwatching and exploring salt marshes. The town also boasts seafront gardens, narrow streets, and a bustling high street with a mix of independent shops and familiar names.

Mike Chinner, who runs CNG Antiques and Collectables and has worked there for three years, noted: "Everyone is very, very friendly. There's some issues with kids and anti-social behaviour, but you get that everywhere! We also have a fabulous golden sandy beach too."

A Peaceful Alternative

Locals appreciate that Walton "isn't busy," making it a perfect antidote for those wanting to escape London's hustle and heat. While summer brings booming business, especially during bank holidays, the town remains quieter than nearby Southend or Clacton. With its golden beaches, supportive community, and easy train access, Walton-on-the-Naze is an ideal day-trip destination for Londoners seeking a relaxed seaside experience.
