Waitrose Expands Retail Presence with First Airport Store at Heathrow Terminal 2
In a significant move for premium retail, Waitrose is set to open its first-ever airport shop at London Heathrow Terminal 2 next month. This marks the supermarket's debut in the airport retail sector, targeting the millions of passengers who pass through one of the world's busiest international hubs.
Strategic Partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail
The expansion is made possible through a collaboration with Lagardère Travel Retail, the owner of the Relay convenience chain. By the end of 2026, Waitrose products will be available in four Relay stores strategically located throughout Terminal 2. The initial store, scheduled to open in May, will be situated past security on the terminal's upper level.
Operating hours for the new Waitrose outlet will cater to early morning and late-night travelers, with doors open seven days a week from 5am to 10pm. This extended schedule ensures that jet-setters have ample opportunity to purchase quality food items before their flights.
Premium Product Selection for Travelers
The airport store will feature a curated selection of Waitrose's most popular items, including:
- Sandwiches from the premium No. 1 range
- Fresh wraps, salads, and sushi options
- Convenient snack pots and fresh fruit selections
- Breakfast items like croissants and granola
- Juices and smoothies for health-conscious travelers
Importantly, Waitrose's popular meal deal offers will remain valid at the Heathrow Relay stores, providing travelers with the same value proposition available at traditional Waitrose locations.
Heathrow's Terminal 2: An Ideal Launch Location
Heathrow Airport maintains its position as one of the world's busiest international airports, with Terminal 2 alone serving approximately 20 million passengers annually. The terminal has earned recognition for its quality service, having been named among the best airport terminals globally in 2026.
The introduction of Waitrose products to Terminal 2's retail offerings represents a strategic enhancement to the passenger experience. This move aligns with Heathrow's commitment to providing premium services and could potentially elevate the terminal's standing in future airport rankings.
The airport retail sector continues to evolve as travelers increasingly seek quality food options during their journeys. Waitrose's entry into this market reflects broader trends toward premiumization in travel retail and responds to passenger demand for familiar, high-quality brands in airport environments.
