Vauxhall Bridge Gets 18-Tonne Weight Limit After Deterioration Found
Vauxhall Bridge Weight Limit Set for July 2026

A weight restriction will be imposed on one of London's busiest bridges this summer as a safety measure following the discovery of structural deterioration. Vauxhall Bridge, which connects Westminster and Lambeth, will have an 18-tonne weight limit introduced from July 1, 2026, Transport for London (TfL) has announced.

Safety Concerns Prompt Action

The 'safety critical' temporary weight restriction comes after crucial components of the bridge that bear weight were found to be in a 'very poor' condition. While the bridge remains safe for use, an inspection revealed that parts of the structure have deteriorated, prompting TfL to take precautionary steps. The Grade II-listed bridge will generally be off limits for large commercial vehicles like loaded lorries, though buses and emergency vehicles will be exempt, meaning no changes for passengers.

According to TfL, the change affects around 200 vehicles per day, or approximately 0.5% of the current 39,500 daily vehicle crossings. Vauxhall Bridge has been closed to extremely heavy vehicles exceeding 44 tonnes, such as large articulated lorries, since 2023.

Why Is the Weight Limit Being Introduced?

The temporary measure is designed to prevent further damage to the bridge before a long-term solution is developed. Bridges are given scores up to 40, with anything under that threshold sparking an investigation or action. Vauxhall Bridge scored 22.2, while nearby Westminster Bridge scored 31 and Lambeth Bridge scored nearly 23.

How Long Will the Restriction Last?

It is not yet known when the weight limit will be lifted. TfL stated that the restriction will remain in place while it works to resolve the problems 'as quickly as possible and continues to develop a long-term plan for the bridge.'

Carl Eddleston, TfL's director of streets and network operations, said: 'Safety is our top priority, and we know how important Vauxhall Bridge is for people travelling across London. This is why we're taking this precautionary step to introduce a weight restriction to the bridge. While the bridge remains safe, limiting heavier vehicles helps us protect and keep it open while we develop the long-term improvements it needs. We are sorry for any disruption caused by the restriction, and we'll continue to monitor the area closely, ensuring we keep people updated as this work progresses.'

London's iconic bridges have become a ticking time bomb after structural issues and wear and tear closed Hammersmith Bridge and Albert Bridge to motor traffic. Last month, concerns were raised about Vauxhall, Westminster, and Lambeth Bridges as they were added to TfL's 'critical' watchlist.
