A fatal boating accident occurred near San Francisco's Alcatraz Island on Tuesday when a pontoon boat capsized and sank, resulting in one death and two missing persons. The San Francisco Fire Department and US Coast Guard responded to the incident, rescuing 16 of the 19 people onboard.
Details of the Incident
The vessel, described as a "pontoon pleasure boat" by San Francisco Fire Lt Mariano Elias, sank approximately 600 yards (548 meters) from Alcatraz Island. It is believed to have departed from the St Francis Yacht Club in the city's Marina district. Upon arrival, first responders found a severely injured individual and initiated CPR, but the person was declared deceased after being brought to shore. A dog also died in the incident.
Rescue and Search Efforts
Of the 16 rescued, 13 were safe on shore, while three others received medical treatment at a San Francisco hospital. Some passengers sustained impact injuries from falling into the water. All passengers are believed to be adults. The US Coast Guard confirmed that search-and-rescue efforts were ongoing as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities deployed 11 boats, helicopters, and divers to locate the two missing individuals. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen stated, "We are going to continue for hours to make sure that we find these two missing people if possible."
Investigation and Conditions
Initial reports suggested a fire had broken out, but Chief Crispen clarified in a Tuesday evening press conference that there was no indication of a blaze. The cause of the capsizing remains unknown. When authorities arrived, the boat was leaking fuel and emitting exhaust from its still-operating motor, with only the top level above water. The boat has since sunk beneath the bay's surface. Crispen noted that if any individual was in the water, tides and winds indicate they would be moving east, though he did not specify the search area's size.
Official Response
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie described the operation as "an all-hands-on-deck search and hopefully rescue" and extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased passenger. Alcatraz Island, a major tourist attraction drawing millions annually, is known for its former high-security prison. The incident has prompted a multi-agency response as efforts continue to find the missing individuals.
