Mother Left 'Shaking and Frightened' After Gatwick Luggage Theft
A 52-year-old man has been charged in connection with the theft of luggage from London Gatwick Airport, an incident that left a mother-of-two ‘shaking and frightened’ and unable to sleep. The alleged theft occurred while the victim was using a baby care facility in the airport's South Terminal.
The Alleged Incident at South Terminal
The offence is alleged to have taken place at approximately 6pm on October 30 at Gatwick's South Terminal. The victim explained to reporters that she had left her luggage just outside the baby room because the room was ‘too small’ to accommodate her luggage trolley.
She estimates that only about five minutes passed between her closing the door and discovering her belongings had vanished. The suspect was reportedly seen leaving the Zone A area via the Southern Walkway and Ring Road towards the B2036 Balcombe Road.
Police Investigation and Court Proceedings
Sussex Police confirmed they arrested a man following a public appeal to identify a person of interest. John Brooks, of Brighton Road, Crawley, has been charged with theft and criminal damage in relation to the event.
A police spokesperson stated: "We can confirm officers arrested a man following this appeal." Brooks is scheduled to appear before Crawley Magistrates' Court on November 25 to answer the charges.
The emotional impact on the victim has been significant. She revealed the loss left her profoundly distressed, saying she ‘has not been able to sleep’ as a result and plans to ‘speak to a therapist about it’.
Gatwick Airport's Statement on Facilities
In response to the incident, a London Gatwick Airport spokesperson emphasised the availability of specially equipped rooms for passengers travelling with children.
"We have specially equipped rooms for breastfeeding and baby changing located throughout the airport," the spokesperson said. "The rooms are clearly signposted by a baby care symbol and are designed to meet the needs of all passengers, with enough space for those travelling with luggage trolleys."
The airport confirmed it is aware of the theft from October 31 and remains in contact with Sussex Police, offering support for their ongoing investigation.
