A car crashed into people queuing at a bus stop in north London on the morning of June 29, 2026, leaving two people injured and the bus shelter destroyed. The incident occurred on the North Circular Road near a slight bend, where witnesses described the car, a black Ford Focus, careering at high speed before hitting the stop and flipping onto its roof.
Witnesses describe chaos and narrow escapes
Rico Kwame, a witness, told Metro: 'People ran for their lives when they saw the car coming. The car came quickly, this is a terrible stretch of the road everyone goes very fast and there is a slight bend. It hit the bus stop and caused carnage.' He added that the driver appeared physically unharmed but possibly in shock, and that 'people were inches from death – it's a miracle no one was killed.'
A mother of two living near the scene said: 'School kids use that stop including my children sometimes, it's peak time to get to school or work. Everybody scattered when the car came towards them. There was another accident there just two days ago.' She called the stretch of road 'a death trap' and questioned why a bus stop is located there.
Emergency response and investigation
Police and ambulances were called at 7:56 am. A London Ambulance spokesperson said: 'We sent resources to the scene including two ambulance crews and an incident response officer. We treated two patients at the scene and took them to a local hospital.' Part of the North Circular was closed, causing rush hour tailbacks. Police are appealing for witnesses and conducting tests to determine the car's speed.
Images from the aftermath show the Ford Focus on its side and the bus shelter reduced to a mangled wreck. The bus stop serves the 112 route towards Ealing and was taped off by police. Another witness heard a 'massive crash' and saw the car flipped over, with people running fearing an explosion.
History of accidents at the location
Residents noted that a lorry was involved in a collision at the same spot the previous week, sparking calls for traffic calming measures. The speed limit on this dual carriageway black spot, near shops and homes, is 40 mph. The incident has renewed concerns about road safety on this stretch of the North Circular.
