The Washington Wizards have secured the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft after winning the lottery on Sunday. This marks the first time the franchise will pick first overall since selecting John Wall in 2010. Wall, who was the Wizards' representative on stage for the lottery results, posed with NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum after the announcement.
Lottery Results and Team Odds
The Wizards, who had the worst record in the NBA this season at 17-65, had a 14% chance of winning the top pick, tied with the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers for the best odds. Washington effectively had a 50-50 chance of landing either a top-four pick or the No. 5 spot. Utah will pick second, Memphis third, and Chicago fourth.
The lottery results brought relief to a franchise that has endured three consecutive losing seasons, the worst in its 65-year history. This season, the Wizards allowed Miami's Bam Adebayo to score 83 points, the second-highest single-game total in league history.
Top Prospects for the No. 1 Pick
With the draft scheduled for June 23 in New York, the Wizards are considering four front-runners for the top selection, all of whom are entering the draft after their freshman year of college:
- AJ Dybantsa (BYU) – Led the nation in scoring with 25.5 points per game.
- Cameron Boozer (Duke) – AP Player of the Year, averaging 22.5 points and 10.1 rebounds.
- Darryn Peterson (Kansas) – Averaged 20.2 points in 24 games.
- Caleb Wilson (North Carolina) – Averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds on 58% shooting.
All four players were present at the lottery announcement at Chicago's Navy Pier. "Standing here is kind of crazy," Dybantsa said. "One of these teams is going to be home."
Future Changes to the Lottery System
This was the eighth and likely final year of the current lottery format, where the worst teams have a 14% chance of winning. A new framework, aimed at further discouraging tanking, is expected to be ratified by the league's Board of Governors in the coming weeks. Under the proposed changes, starting next season, the three worst teams would have a 5.4% chance of winning the lottery, while the next seven teams would each have an 8.1% chance. The lottery would also expand from 14 to 16 teams.
Other Lottery Picks
The Los Angeles Clippers secured the fifth pick via a trade with the Pacers, followed by Brooklyn (6th), Sacramento (7th), Atlanta (8th), Dallas (9th), Milwaukee (10th), Golden State (11th), Oklahoma City (12th), Miami (13th), and Charlotte (14th).
