West Ham United's search for a new centre-back has suffered a significant setback, with the club now expected to miss out on a key defensive target.
Hammers Set for Defensive Disappointment
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has identified strengthening his backline as the next priority in the January transfer window, following earlier attacking additions. The need is acute, with West Ham possessing the leakiest defence in the Premier League, having conceded 43 goals this season. Despite widespread reports of interest, the Hammers are set to fail in their pursuit of Toulouse defender and England youth international Charlie Cresswell.
Wolfsburg Storm Ahead in Cresswell Chase
The 23-year-old, who moved to Toulouse from Leeds United in July 2024 and starred in England's Euro Under-21 Championship win, had been tipped for a Premier League move. However, Sky Sports transfer expert Florian Plettenberg reported on Wednesday that Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg are now exploring a winter deal. He stated that "concrete negotiations are ongoing" for the defender, who is under contract until 2028.
This development comes after Plettenberg noted that West Ham, despite their interest, had not yet opened formal talks with Toulouse. That delay appears to have proven costly, with Wolfsburg seizing the initiative for a player labelled a 'top target' for the London club.
Short-Term Fix Emerges as Alternative
With the Cresswell deal slipping away, West Ham's focus is shifting towards alternative options. The club has been more recently linked with a move for Monaco's former Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier. This potential switch would represent a more short-term solution, given Dier is 31 years old compared to Cresswell's 23.
European football expert Andy Brassell had previously suggested that Cresswell needed a "step up" from Toulouse to force his way into the senior England squad, a path that now seems likely to run through the Bundesliga rather than the London Stadium. For West Ham and Nuno Espirito Santo, the urgent task of fixing a faltering defence must now continue with other candidates in sight.
