VAR Denies Nottingham Forest Victory in Tense Stalemate Against Fulham
For a fleeting moment, it appeared Vítor Pereira's long-awaited breakthrough had finally arrived at the City Ground. Dan Ndoye, introduced as a halftime substitute, surged into the penalty area after the hour mark and delivered a precise side-footed finish, triggering an eruption of relief among the home supporters.
However, the jubilation was abruptly cut short by the video assistant referee, who detected a marginal offside position. This decision proved particularly agonizing for a Nottingham Forest side that has consistently struggled with finishing throughout the season. Pereira's excruciating wait for his first Premier League victory this campaign continues, with the manager having collected just four points from his 14 matches in charge across Wolverhampton Wanderers and Forest.
Relegation Battle Intensifies
The solitary point earned from this stalemate did lift Forest out of the Premier League's bottom three, but their position remains precarious, separated from West Ham United only by goal difference. The team had created a seven-point cushion after defeating West Ham in January, but that advantage has now evaporated. Forest cannot afford to depend solely on the misfortunes of other relegation-threatened clubs like Tottenham Hotspur.
Both teams entered the match in subdued spirits. Forest suffered a 1-0 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday evening, while Fulham squandered an opportunity to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals with a loss to Championship side Southampton last Sunday. Marco Silva's Fulham find themselves in a familiar mid-table position, narrowly missing out on cup success and still awaiting a return to European competition.
First Half Struggles
Silva welcomed back Harry Wilson, Fulham's leading goalscorer this season, after a two-game absence due to an ankle injury. Pereira made a tactical adjustment to the lineup that held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium, reinstating Callum Hudson-Odoi on the right wing to challenge Antonee Robinson.
The opening half was largely uneventful, with Forest displaying nervousness, possibly still affected by their European disappointment, while Fulham remained comfortable without threatening the final third. Elliot Anderson provided the primary spark for Forest, even if his execution was lacking. Shortly after sending a corner directly out of play, the England midfielder broke through the lines by connecting with an Igor Jesus knockdown. He maneuvered past Calvin Bassey inside the area, but his intended left-footed curler drifted harmlessly wide of Bernd Leno's goal. Bassey came closest for Fulham with a close-range header that tested goalkeeper Matz Sels.
Forest's recurring issue this campaign has been their inability to convert chances, having launched 22 unsuccessful shots against Midtjylland earlier in the week. Only Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored fewer league goals this season. This deficiency was evident again when Forest constructed their best move of the first half. Morgan Gibbs-White's clever backheel on the left found the advancing Neco Williams, whose cutback reached Nicolás Domínguez at the edge of the area. The Argentine midfielder aimed for the bottom left corner but lacked sufficient power to beat Leno.
Second Half Resurgence and VAR Controversy
Pereira, visibly animated on the sidelines, expressed frustration when Jesus failed to control an Anderson pass before the half-hour mark. Unsurprisingly, Forest emerged after the interval with a revised approach. Gibbs-White shifted to a central role, flanked by two new wingers, Omari Hutchinson and Ndoye, tasked with stretching Fulham's defense. "For me, Morgan is not a winger," Pereira explained. "He is a player to operate inside the lines, between the lines. At halftime, I realized I did not want him playing as a winger because I prefer to bring him into central areas to influence the game."
Ndoye made an immediate impact, sprinting behind the defense to latch onto a long ball from Murillo. Bassey clumsily fouled him, prompting referee Sam Barrott to award a penalty, but the assistant referee's raised flag swiftly nullified the decision for offside. Ola Aina nearly broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box that rattled the crossbar.
The celebrations finally erupted when Ndoye again raced behind the defense, collected a pass from Williams, and calmly slotted the ball past Leno. Here, at last, was the clinical finishing Forest had been craving. Yet, VAR intervened once more, identifying the slightest of offsides, with Ndoye's left heel fractionally beyond the defensive line. Fulham almost compounded Forest's misery moments later when Rodrigo Muniz controlled a cross on his chest and fired a volley, only for Aina to make a crucial headed block.
Late Efforts and Managerial Reactions
Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi came closest to scoring late in the match, with Pereira praising his impact: "Taiwo created a lot of problems, a lot of problems." There was surprise among supporters when Gibbs-White was substituted in the 74th minute, prompting audible frustration from the stands.
Silva expressed satisfaction with his team's defensive solidity, while Pereira emphasized the positive aspects of Forest's performance. "What I retain in my mind about this game," the Forest head coach stated, "was the spirit of the team. They tried everything to win the game. This is the spirit we must maintain until the end of the season." Nevertheless, the urgent need for goals remains stark. "They are trying, they are trying," Pereira reiterated, highlighting the persistent struggle in front of goal.
