Igor Tudor Embraces 'Something Big' as Tottenham Snatch Dramatic Draw at Liverpool
Igor Tudor hailed Tottenham Hotspur's fighting spirit as "something big" after his team secured a dramatic last-minute draw against Liverpool at Anfield. The Croatian head coach, who had endured four consecutive defeats since taking charge, finally earned his first point with Spurs thanks to Richarlison's stoppage-time equalizer.
Late Heroics Ease Pressure on Struggling Spurs
Dominik Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the lead with a first-half free-kick, putting Tudor's side on course for a fifth straight loss. However, with Tottenham fielding just twelve senior outfield players and unable to fill their bench, Richarlison's late intervention provided a crucial lifeline. Tudor handed Premier League debuts to two teenagers in the match, yet his depleted squad managed to hold the defending champions to a draw.
"Some fresh air, some good things for the confidence of the players, everyone around the club and especially the fans," Tudor declared post-match. "Good team spirit. Seeing the circumstances, the team was today coming here to Anfield with 12 players, with what we already know, so this is something big. We stayed in the game, we believed. I felt that we could score the goal, the players also felt that."
Liverpool's Champions League Hopes Take Another Hit
For Liverpool, the draw represents another damaging setback in their quest for Champions League qualification. The Reds missed the opportunity to move into fourth place, instead recording their seventh draw of a frustrating season. Manager Arne Slot lamented his team's inability to convert chances and keep clean sheets, with Liverpool managing just four shots on target from seventeen attempts.
"Of course it's damaging but it's how many times this has been damaging for us," Slot admitted. "We don't help ourselves at all. It's so many times this season that we've created much more chances than the amount of goals we score and usually in the Premier League, you see a lot of teams outperforming their chances but that's definitely not what we are doing throughout the whole season."
Critical Period Ahead for Both Clubs
The result moves Tottenham one point above the relegation zone, providing much-needed momentum ahead of crucial fixtures. Spurs face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, needing to overturn a three-goal deficit, before hosting relegation rivals Nottingham Forest at the weekend.
"It's a long way to our goal, which is to stay in the Premier League," Tudor acknowledged. "We've still a lot of games to play, but today was important to show what they showed. Independently of the result, as I've said, when you are honest, you need to give everything, then football will give back to you. That was my words before the game, and this happened today."
Liverpool now sit fifth, just one point above Chelsea, with three matches against Champions League qualification rivals remaining in their final eight games. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai expressed frustration at another late collapse, stating: "I feel flat. We have to wake up because if we carry on like this, we should be happy with the Conference League. I don't know why this is happening, I honestly don't know."
