Tottenham Hotspur have outperformed their expected goals (xG) for a fifth consecutive season, according to data analysed by a no deposit bonus casino site. Despite a campaign plagued by injuries and relegation fears, Spurs have been remarkably clinical in front of goal.
Survival Hopes Boosted
Tottenham's hopes of Premier League survival have been significantly boosted after a victory over Aston Villa and West Ham's defeat at Brentford. Spurs climbed out of the bottom three for the first time in three weeks, making their London rivals favourites for relegation.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi has picked up seven points from his first four games in charge, getting a tune out of a heavily injury-stricken squad. However, the job is not done yet, with Leeds next up for De Zerbi's men.
Overachieving in Front of Goal
Spurs have scored 45 goals this season, only one more than their worst goal-scoring season in 1996/1997. However, their xG is just 36.4, meaning they have overachieved by 8.6 goals or 23.63%. That makes them the biggest xG overachievers in the league, ahead of already relegated Burnley (+18.4%).
This is not a new trend. Tottenham have outperformed their xG in each of the previous five seasons, with 2021/2022 being their most successful, exceeding xG by 26.3% to score 68 goals and secure a third-placed finish.
Injury Woes
One major positive is that Spurs have had many injuries to contend with, including key players like Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Dominic Solanke, and James Maddison. This has reduced creativity in the final third, but they have still been very effective when chances arise.
Had they failed to take those opportunities, the relegation battle might already be over. Instead, Spurs could end the coming weekend four points ahead of West Ham with two games left, all but securing Premier League survival.
