Thomas Partey faces England amid rape charges, visa issues

Thomas Partey is set to face England in the World Cup on Tuesday in Boston, despite facing multiple rape charges. The former Arsenal midfielder has denied all accusations and is available after the USA granted him a visa, unlike Canada which refused him entry.

Handshake Dilemma for England Players

The Football Association has remained non-committal about the pre-match handshake ritual. England players, including former Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, will decide individually whether to shake hands with Partey. Legal experts advise the FA to avoid taking an official stance, as it could be seen as prejudicial to Partey's upcoming trial.

Partey's Legal Situation

Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault last year, with two additional rape charges later. He denies all allegations and welcomes the chance to clear his name. His trial is scheduled for next year at Southwark Crown Court.

Visa Controversy

Partey missed Ghana's opening World Cup match against Panama due to Canada denying him entry. A court later revealed that Partey had misled officials in his visa application by answering 'No' to having ever been charged with a criminal offence. This sparked political backlash in Ghana, with opposition politician Fiifi Boafo calling for accountability.

Other Players Accused

Partey is not alone. Japan's Kaishu Sano was arrested for gang-rape in 2024 but charges were dropped after a reported apology and payment. Morocco's Achraf Hakimi faces trial for alleged rape in 2023, which he denies. Hakimi expressed readiness for trial.

Ghana's World Cup Campaign

Despite the controversy, Ghana secured a 1-0 win over Panama with a late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. Coach Carlos Queiroz maintains Partey should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Partey remains with the team in Rhode Island and is expected to play against England.
