Ben Stokes will return as England captain for the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed. The decision comes after Stokes missed the first Test following an incident that led to a formal disciplinary process.
McCullum Confirms Stokes' Return
When asked directly if Stokes would resume the captaincy, McCullum stated, "Yeah, at the moment that’s what we’re planning. The rest of the squad will be announced this afternoon once we’ve told a few of the lads." The announcement ends speculation about Stokes' immediate future as skipper.
Supporting the Man, Not the Actions
McCullum addressed the mixed messaging around Stokes' mental state, saying, "People always have a difference of opinion, that’s the way things are – people read things differently. From my point of view I’ve been speaking to Ben every day since the incident and have obviously been trying to be supportive." He noted that Stokes played cricket during the week and scored runs, adding, "He looked like he had a bit of pep in his step as well. We know a fit, firing Ben Stokes is an asset to every team in the world." McCullum kept private conversations with Stokes confidential.
On his relationship with Stokes, McCullum said, "You’ve got to separate the actions from the man. I was disappointed with the actions, which didn’t meet the standards we’ve set for ourselves, but then you support the man. I’ve always firmly believed in that." He emphasized their shared vision for a long-term successful England team.
Disciplinary Process and Backing
Asked if he and director of cricket Rob Key could have backed Stokes more as captain immediately after the incident, McCullum explained, "There was a formal disciplinary process we had to go through. Until you have that information, nobody is able to make any decisions or make any emphatic public statements. People make mistakes, right? We all try to abide by standards, but you’re always supporting the man."
McCullum expressed no problem with Stokes' return and looked forward to closing out a series win against a strong New Zealand side. "If we do that I think it’ll be a mighty achievement, particularly after the last week which has been very difficult." He also praised interim captain Joe Root, saying, "The way he picked up the responsibility in a difficult period… I can’t speak highly enough of him."
