Senegal Forfeits 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Title After Controversial Pitch Walk-Off

In a stunning reversal, Senegal has been officially stripped of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations championship title. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ruled that Morocco will be awarded a 3-0 victory in the final match, overturning Senegal's dramatic extra-time win that had secured their second AFCON trophy.

The Controversial Final Match Incident

The decision stems from Senegal's decision to walk off the pitch during the championship match against Morocco in January 2025. The protest occurred in the closing stages of normal time when a penalty was awarded to Morocco. After a significant 16-minute delay, Senegal returned to the field, but the controversy was far from over.

Morocco's Brahim Diaz saw his Panenka-style penalty saved by Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, sending the match into extra time. It was during this additional period that Pape Gueye scored what appeared to be the championship-winning goal for Senegal, securing what fans believed was their second AFCON title.

CAF's Official Ruling and Regulations

However, CAF's Appeal Board has now determined that Senegal violated competition regulations through their pitch walk-off. The ruling specifically cites Article 82 of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations regulations, which states that any team refusing to play or leaving the field before match completion without referee authorization will be considered the loser and eliminated from competition.

The application of Article 84 further mandates that teams violating Articles 82 or 83 will be permanently eliminated and lose the match with a 3-0 scoreline recorded against them.

In an official statement released Tuesday night, CAF declared: "The Senegal National Team is declared to have forfeited the Final Match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, with the result of the Match being recorded as 3-0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football."

Additional Rulings and Penalties

The CAF Appeal Board also addressed several other matters from the controversial final:

  • Moroccan player Ismaël Saibari received a modified suspension of two official CAF matches, with one match suspended, while his $100,000 fine was set aside
  • The Moroccan football federation saw their fine for ball boy conduct reduced to $50,000
  • A $100,000 fine for interference around the VAR review area was confirmed
  • The penalty for a laser incident was reduced to $10,000

This unprecedented decision marks one of the most significant reversals in African football history, transforming what appeared to be Senegal's championship celebration into Morocco's official victory. The ruling underscores CAF's commitment to enforcing competition regulations, even in high-stakes championship scenarios.
