Schmeichel Questions Sesko's Readiness for Regular Starting Role at Manchester United
Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel has delivered a nuanced assessment of summer signing Benjamin Sesko, praising the striker's natural instincts and character while expressing doubts about his readiness to become a guaranteed starter for every match. The legendary goalkeeper's comments come amid Sesko's impressive recent goal-scoring form for the Red Devils.
Sesko's Rollercoaster Debut Season at Old Trafford
After a challenging beginning to his Manchester United career that saw him go nine games without scoring during a difficult winter period, Sesko has dramatically turned his fortunes around. The 22-year-old Slovenian international has netted eight times in his last ten appearances, silencing early critics who questioned United's decision to invest £74 million in a young striker with no previous experience in English football.
Since the start of the year, Sesko has developed a reputation as an impactful super substitute, with growing calls from fans and pundits for interim manager Michael Carrick to grant him more starting opportunities. Carrick did exactly that for United's recent clash with Crystal Palace, and Sesko rewarded his manager's faith by scoring what proved to be the winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
Carrick's Selection Dilemma and Schmeichel's Analysis
Despite his recent scoring exploits, Sesko found himself back on the substitutes' bench for Sunday's match against Aston Villa after failing to score against Newcastle. He nevertheless made another significant impact, coming off the bench to score United's third goal in their 3-1 victory.
Before the Villa match, Carrick admitted that leaving Sesko out of his starting lineup "wasn't an easy decision" given the striker's recent goal-scoring form. "We've just got a good forward line to choose from, and it's just getting that balance right really from game to game," United's interim manager explained in his pre-match interview with Sky Sports. "Whether it's starting the game, whether it's the impact coming off the bench. I think over the eight games really, we've had good impact in different ways coming off the bench, and I think that's a big part of the game."
In his post-match analysis on Viaplay, Schmeichel expressed understanding of Carrick's decision not to start Sesko against Villa. "It's great to have players where you think, when they come on, that there's a chance, a very, very good chance, that they're going to score," Schmeichel explained. "He's got great instincts and we've seen this now in the last eight or nine games. His instincts are very good."
The 1999 treble-winning goalkeeper added: "I'm not sure he's completely ready to be a starting number nine in every game so I thought it was quite good of Michael Carrick to keep him on the bench and keep him hungry. He's come on and he is enthusiastic."
Fernandes' Record-Breaking Season and Future Speculation
The match also saw Bruno Fernandes set up goals for Casemiro and Matheus Cunha against Villa, bringing his assists tally to sixteen in the Premier League this season. This achievement surpasses David Beckham's previous record for an individual season as a Manchester United player.
Schmeichel's Viaplay colleague Jaap Stam, who played alongside the Danish goalkeeper at Old Trafford, emphasized the importance of retaining Fernandes for United to achieve their future ambitions. The United captain has been linked with moves to the Saudi Pro League since 2023 and admitted in December that this season could potentially be his last with the club.
When questioned about his confidence in Fernandes remaining at United beyond the summer, Schmeichel responded unequivocally: "Yeah, for sure. If you think back to last summer, there was an opportunity to sell him to Saudi and the club would get about £100 million for him. That would have helped enormously with the state of the financials at the club. Bruno said, 'No! I don't want to leave!', and he could have made a ton of money but he loves the football club."
The former Denmark international added: "Having made that decision last summer, I cannot see anyone tempting him with whatever: better club, more money. I think he loves it here. He's the captain, he's the biggest player here and the fans absolutely love him. I just can't see it."
As Manchester United continue their Premier League campaign, the debate surrounding Sesko's optimal role within the team persists, with Schmeichel's comments highlighting the delicate balance managers must strike between developing young talent and fielding their most competitive starting eleven.
