Chelsea Boss Rosenior Predicts 'Massive' Impact From Star Striker Joao Pedro Against PSG
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has confidently backed his star striker Joao Pedro to deliver a "massive" performance when the Blues face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this week. The highly anticipated last-16 first leg clash takes place in Paris on Wednesday night, with Chelsea looking to overcome the reigning European champions.
Chelsea's Recent Form and Pedro's Explosive Scoring Run
Chelsea's journey to this crucial European encounter has been marked by recent turbulence followed by resurgence. The London club endured a challenging period last month, failing to secure a victory in three consecutive Premier League matches. They drew against relegation-threatened Leeds United and Burnley before suffering a defeat to title contenders Arsenal.
However, Chelsea has since rediscovered their winning form with an emphatic 4-1 triumph over top-four rivals Aston Villa. They followed this with a hard-fought FA Cup victory against Championship side Wrexham, though not without a scare that required extra time.
At the heart of Chelsea's revival stands Brazilian striker Joao Pedro, whose exceptional form has captured attention across European football. Since his £60 million transfer from Brighton last summer, Pedro has consistently impressed, but his performances over the past two months have been particularly remarkable. The forward has netted an impressive 11 goals in his last 12 appearances across all competitions.
Pedro's standout moment came with his first Chelsea hat-trick during the commanding victory at Villa Park. He continued his scoring streak by finding the net again in Saturday's FA Cup win over Wrexham, despite Rosenior initially planning to rest him for the crucial PSG encounter.
Rosenior's High Praise for His 'World-Class' Striker
Speaking after Chelsea secured their FA Cup quarter-final place, Rosenior expressed his admiration for Pedro's current form. "Joao is on fire, he's on fire," the Chelsea manager told talkSPORT. "I think everybody knew when he picked up the ball and he was driving at their defence that something good was about to happen."
Rosenior revealed his strategic thinking behind Pedro's limited involvement against Wrexham, explaining: "I wanted to manage his minutes because he's going to be massive for us in Paris on Wednesday. But he did a really good job at helping us through this round."
In his pre-match press conference ahead of the PSG clash, Rosenior elevated his praise further, branding the summer signing as "world-class." The Chelsea manager stated: "I think Joao's in that category now. Consistently, during the two months that I've been here, he's shown that level. He's a world-class striker. I wouldn't swap Joao for anyone in this moment to be honest, because he's showing all of the things and all the attributes I want to see in my No. 9."
PSG's Vulnerabilities and Chelsea's Opportunity
While PSG stormed to their first Champions League trophy last season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final, their current campaign has been less convincing. Under manager Luis Enrique, the French champions have shown vulnerability, narrowly edging past Ligue 1 rivals Monaco in the previous Champions League round and losing two of their last four league matches.
Former PSG player Eric Rabesandratana has identified significant weaknesses in the French side's approach, particularly highlighting defensive issues. "What PSG lack is a defensive state of mind," he told Capital Football. "They are struggling physically and if they are not at their best from that viewpoint it has a domino effect on all the rest. It dents their attacking play, their rhythm and in defensive transition it becomes tough as a result."
Rabesandratana added concerning observations about PSG's defensive organization: "On top of that, their defensive behaviour is concerning when it comes to regaining their positions, catching up with the opposition, aggressiveness... this PSG team is lacking many things. Chelsea have all the qualities to make life hard for Paris Saint-Germain. There's no doubt that it will be a tough game."
The former PSG player noted that the French champions appear to be in "survival mode" with matches coming thick and fast, creating additional challenges for Enrique's squad. He also reminded observers that this Champions League encounter represents a rematch of last summer's Club World Cup final, where Chelsea comprehensively defeated PSG 3-0.
Stakes and Potential Quarter-Final Opponents
The winner of this high-profile last-16 tie will advance to face either Premier League champions Liverpool or Turkish leaders Galatasaray in the Champions League quarter-finals. Despite PSG entering the match as favorites to progress, Rosenior's Chelsea side appears increasingly confident they can cause an upset, particularly with Joao Pedro in such devastating form.
Rabesandratana concluded his analysis with a warning for PSG: "It's not easy to cope with it but there's a lot at stake against Chelsea, a team that outclassed PSG at the Club World Cup. The team has to rise to the occasion but it will be very tough."
As Wednesday's crucial encounter approaches, all eyes will be on Joao Pedro to see if he can deliver the "massive" impact his manager has predicted against the reigning European champions in what promises to be a compelling Champions League showdown.
