Wayne Rooney Issues Cautious Warning on Arsenal Teenager Max Dowman
Wayne Rooney has expressed excitement about Arsenal's teenage sensation Max Dowman but issued a warning that fans should not expect to see much of him during the Premier League run-in. This comes after Dowman, aged 16, became the youngest ever goalscorer in Premier League history by netting Arsenal's second goal in a 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
Arsenal's Title Charge Bolstered by Late Goals
The Gunners, aiming for their first league title since 2004, appeared set to drop two points at home to Everton until late strikes from Viktor Gyokeres and Dowman secured a crucial win. With Manchester City failing to defeat relegation-battlers West Ham later that day, Arsenal now hold a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League with just seven games remaining.
Arsenal supporters are understandably thrilled by Dowman, who made his Premier League debut in August, and hope to see more of the England U19 star as the club pursues an unprecedented quadruple. Mikel Arteta's side are not only leading the title race but also competing in the Champions League knockout stages, the upcoming Carabao Cup final, and the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Rooney Emphasizes Education and Careful Management
While some suggest Dowman could play a significant role across these competitions, Rooney believes his game-time and development will be meticulously managed. The former Manchester United and England captain highlighted the importance of Dowman's education on The Wayne Rooney Show, stating, 'He has got his GCSEs and his education, I'm sure for him and his family, that's important as well.'
Rooney added, 'What an opportunity for him to be around the squad. He could be a Premier League winner when he's still finishing school off. He's got an aura and a belief about him and it was the same against Everton. If it's education first, I don't think we'll see much of him over the next few weeks.' He cautioned that Dowman might not feature as frequently as he'd like but noted, 'you've got many years ahead of you.'
Praise for Dowman's Composure and Potential
Discussing Dowman's abilities, Rooney remarked, 'He seems, from the games I've watched, to not let that pressure affect him. He gets the ball, he holds on to it, he commits defenders, he goes to take them on, and so he definitely looks like he's got a confidence about him.' He also emphasized that Arteta and senior players will ensure Dowman stays grounded, while encouraging him to enjoy his success.
Rooney said, 'Sometimes people think that enjoying success is arrogant and I just think they do it in the [USA]. They enjoy it and they celebrate it. So when we've got a young lad like that coming through as a 16-year-old, he's clearly got a lot of ability and you just hope he can go and fulfil that potential. Let him enjoy it and go and express himself.'
Statistical Impact and Teammate Acclaim
Beyond his historic goal, Dowman's performance against Everton was statistically impressive. He attempted the most dribbles, created the second most chances, won the second most fouls, and was awarded man of the match. Teammate Viktor Gyokeres, a £64 million striker, praised Dowman, saying, 'When you see him play, you don't think that he's 16. You don't think about it when he has the ball with the composure and the confidence he plays with. It's incredible – to see him score that goal was amazing.'
Gyokeres added, 'He's been developing. He got an injury and was out for a while so I didn't see him for a few months, but now he's back and he's playing still with the confidence that he did before. He makes a lot of right decisions when he comes on the pitch. He's an incredible and very good player.'
Arsenal's Upcoming Challenges
Arsenal will temporarily shift focus from the Premier League title race to the Champions League, facing Bayer Leverkusen in a second-leg last-16 clash. In the first leg in Germany, Kai Havertz's late penalty secured a 1-1 draw for the Premier League leaders against his former club, despite not being at their best.
As the season progresses, the management of young talents like Max Dowman will be crucial for Arsenal's ambitions across multiple fronts, balancing immediate success with long-term player development.
