Wayne Rooney has named Manchester United's Luke Shaw as the most improved player in the Premier League this season. The Manchester United legend also heaped praise on Bruno Fernandes, whom he considers the Player of the Year after a stellar campaign.
Manchester United's Turnaround Under Michael Carrick
Manchester United looked destined for another disappointing season under Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January with the club outside the top four. An embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town compounded their struggles. However, since Michael Carrick took over, the Red Devils have transformed, finishing third in the Premier League—just seven points behind champions Manchester City—and securing Champions League qualification.
Carrick's interim role became permanent after his impressive results convinced the United hierarchy.
Bruno Fernandes: The Heartbeat of United
Bruno Fernandes has been the standout performer, setting a Premier League record with 21 assists and winning the Player of the Season award. Rooney, speaking on his BBC podcast, said: 'I am delighted for Bruno. He has been fantastic this season. For me, he's been the player of the year because of the influence he has, how driven he is, and he's scored a few goals as well. He has been the heartbeat of that team.'
Although Arsenal players were strong contenders after winning their first title in 22 years, Rooney believes Fernandes deserved the accolade.
Luke Shaw: Most Improved Player
Rooney also singled out Luke Shaw as the most improved player in the league. The 30-year-old left-back enjoyed one of his most consistent seasons, starting every Premier League game for United. Rooney explained: 'I think, for me, Luke Shaw has been the most improved player this season. I know he's an experienced player now, but his level this season has been much better than in recent seasons.'
Rooney dismissed the idea that Kobbie Mainoo could be considered, stating that Mainoo's improvement was merely a result of not playing under the previous manager.
Shaw's performances have reignited talk of an England recall, though Thomas Tuchel has looked elsewhere for the World Cup.
Carrick Confident on Fernandes Future
Manchester United ended the season with a 3-0 win at Brighton. Carrick praised Fernandes, whose contract expires next summer, though United have an option to extend. 'I've got no reason to think otherwise,' Carrick said. 'We've loved what he's done, and he loves being here. He's such an influence for us. He's been the captain and led by example. He wants to stay on every single game because he's enjoying his football.'
