Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp singled out Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres for special praise following a vital contribution in the Gunners' 3-2 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Redknapp's Verdict on Gyokeres and Saka
While labelling it an "exceptional night" for the Swedish forward, Redknapp also identified a persistent tactical concern in Mikel Arteta's setup. He pointed to the dynamic on the right flank, where Bukayo Saka's preference for cutting inside on his left foot can limit service for a traditional number nine.
"When he plays for Arsenal, the major problem is Bukayo Saka plays on the right and he's left-footed," Redknapp explained. "So, when Bukayo gets into that position, instead of firing it across the face of goal, he wants to chop back. That's where the frustration comes from."
Gyokeres Seizes Crucial Opportunity
The striker's goal, his eighth of the season across all competitions, came from a more traditional source. Ben White delivered a fierce, low cross that Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez failed to gather on the wet surface. Gyokeres, displaying classic predatory instincts, was on hand to tap in from close range.
This moment was seen as a significant step for the big-money signing, who has faced scrutiny over his goal return despite consistent praise for his off-the-ball work ethic. The strike gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead in a match they eventually navigated to a narrow one-goal advantage, with Chelsea's two late replies from substitute Alejandro Garnacho ensuring a tense second leg.
Mixed Feelings After a Missed Chance
Redknapp believed the Gunners let a commanding position slip. "It was a game Arsenal could've been really comfortable in," he stated. "They will be kicking themselves... this game could've been dead and buried."
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Gyokeres acknowledged the mixed emotions. "I think it was a tough game," he said. "Unfortunate to have conceded two but offensively we scored three, so happy with that... It's good to come away with a win and advantage for the second leg."
The result leaves the Carabao Cup semi-final finely poised ahead of the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal holding a slender lead but aware of Chelsea's threat.
