Coronation Street's George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) has told Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) she is no longer welcome to join him on a trip to Somerset, after discovering she has continued to spend behind his back. The decision comes just weeks after Christina admitted to a secret spending addiction, and it leaves her slipping into despair as she fears she has permanently destroyed their relationship.
George, long regarded as one of Weatherfield's warmest and most kind-hearted residents, had been supportive of Christina after she came clean about her addiction. She had set up a credit card in the name of her ex-husband, Lenny (Joe Osbourne), and had also used the details of Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) and George's sister, Glenda (Jodie Prenger), to obtain additional credit cards. Christina had attended an addicts support group at the community centre, but Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) soon learned that she still hadn't managed to get a handle on her spending.
Secrets and Suspicion
Christina's behaviour had raised eyebrows in recent weeks, with mystery phone calls and secretive trips to her car. Glenda, determined to uncover the truth, rifled through Christina's bag and found a credit card statement belonging to Mary Taylor. George's confusion deepened when he spotted Christina hugging Lenny in the precinct, and upon confronting her, she revealed the full extent of her deception.
Despite her confession and efforts to seek help, Todd's discovery that Christina had continued to spend behind George's back proved to be the final straw. George, feeling betrayed, decided to set off for Somerset alone, leaving Christina devastated.
