Rangers target Derek McInnes to replace Danny Röhl

Rangers are likely to target Hearts manager Derek McInnes as a replacement for Danny Röhl, who is expected to join RB Salzburg. Talks between the Ibrox club and Salzburg are ongoing regarding a deal for Röhl, who was appointed by Rangers last October. The 37-year-old began his coaching career at Leipzig, another club within the RB network. There is a growing belief in Glasgow that Röhl will accept Salzburg's offer, with a move potentially happening within days.

McInnes in line for Rangers return

If Röhl departs, Rangers are expected to turn to McInnes. The former Rangers player guided Hearts to second place in the Scottish Premiership this season, narrowly missing out on their first league title since 1960 after a final-day defeat at Celtic Park. McInnes took over at Hearts in summer 2025 after leaving Kilmarnock and was named Scotland's manager of the year within 12 months.

McInnes previously rejected the opportunity to manage Rangers in 2017, but it would be surprising if the 54-year-old turned them down a second time. Steven Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers, has also been linked with the position.

Hearts' growing profile

Rangers have already signed Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland after the striker exercised his right to leave Tynecastle for free at the end of the season. While any approach for McInnes would be unwelcome at Hearts, the club's reputation has been boosted by the involvement of Tony Bloom and Jamestown Analytics.
