R&A Golf Club Names First Woman Captain in 272 Years

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has appointed amateur player Claire Dowling as the first woman captain in its 272-year history. This historic milestone comes 12 years after the club, located at the renowned 'home of golf' on Scotland's east coast, opened its membership to women in 2014.

Dowling's Appointment and Tenure

Dowling will officially serve as club captain from September of this year, following her nomination by previous holders of the office. Her tenure will coincide with the 2027 Open Championship, which is set to be hosted by St Andrews, adding further significance to her leadership period.

A Distinguished Golfing Career

The Dublin-born golfer has an impressive track record, having represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup on four occasions. She was a key member of the 1986 team that achieved a historic first victory over the United States on American soil. Later, she captained the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team during their loss at Ganton in northern England in 2000.

Role Within the Club

Dowling was among the first women to join the Royal and Ancient club after its membership policy change and has since served on several committees, contributing to the club's governance. The club boasts a worldwide membership of approximately 2,500 individuals. Historically, it played a major role in administering the rules of golf, but this responsibility was transferred to a newly formed group of companies known as the R&A in 2004.
